Melanie Gillman is a cartoonist holding an MFA in comics from the Center for Cartoon Studies and will hold a discussion about art and how to color with pencils. Bring your favorite coloring book and pencils (though not mandatory).
Melanie currently lives in Tulsa, OK and works on all types of comics like As the Crow Flies and Smbitten, both all-colored-pencil graphic novels. The comics have been published by Boom! Studios, Iron Circus Comics, Lion Forge Comics, Slate, VICE, Prism Comics, Northwest Press, and The Nib.
Melanie began teaching Professional Practices at the California College of the Arts (CCA) in 2015, and was later appointed Senior Lecturer in Comics. They teach courses at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and the Art Students' League of Denver, and have been a writing fellow with the Tulsa Artist Fellowship program since 2017.
Smbitten is a lesbian romance about swing-dancing and vampirism. As the Crow Flies is a story about Charlie — a queer 13 year old girl who finds herself stranded in a dangerous place: an all-white Christian youth backpacking camp. It has been nominated for the Slate Cartoonist Studio Prize (2013), an Eisner Award (2014), and an Ignatz (2016), and won a Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators (2016).
Melanie's art will be displayed all day from 11am inside NOIR Bistro & Bar. Melanie will hold a discussion and "how-to" beginning at 2pm.
